Towards a Fair and Sustainable International Partnership

On Saturday, 23 August 2025, after the weekly market at 12:30 p.m., we will be looking at an Algerian project.

In 2023, otte1 hosted photographic artist Fethi Sahraoui as a scholarship holder for three months at the Schleswig-Holstein Residency. He is a member of Collective 220 in Algiers. 220 is the number of the hotel room where some of the collective’s founding members met during a photography festival in Algiers. The desire to found this group arose primarily from the need to create a space for exchange, reflection and collaborative work in an environment that had previously lacked such collective experiences. In addition to its function as a kind of internal shared laboratory, Collective 220 is also a means of establishing external connections and promoting exchange with photographers, artists and other collectives around the world.

This year, photographer Soufian Chemcham, another member of Collective 220, received a scholarship from otte1. While considering ways to continue our collaboration, we were made aware of the WAYS programme of the German Federal Cultural Foundation. It is well suited to supporting our endeavours. The “Anbahnung” fund supports up to 9.5 months of international research aimed at exploring content and getting to know key players. Through on-site visits, discussions and workshops, artistic goals and forms of fair and sustainable cooperation can be developed.

The WAYS programme aims to support cultural institutions in Germany in establishing long-term artistic partnerships with non-European partners, particularly from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, Oceania, Central, South and Southeast Asia, and in implementing joint artistic projects.

We will keep you informed.
