From Japan to the Pamirs, Oblomow, the Gulag and Iceland
On Saturday, 31 May 2025 at 12:30 there will be a presentation after the market.
Over the past 18 years, scholarship holder Ikuru Kuwajima has travelled extensively from Asia to Europe, particularly to areas that were part of the Soviet Union. In his artist talk, Ikuru Kuwajima will present some of his earlier artistic works: They can be historical and geographical, as in his ‘Trail’ series about the Afghan-Tajik border, or they can be more introspective, as in ‘I, Oblomov’, which refers to a literary masterpiece. Or it can be a mixture of scientific and historical research that connects two remote places, as in ‘Repatriation’, which shows the path of driftwood travelling from the Gulag prison camps in Siberia to Iceland.

In addition, on 14 June, Ikuru will present his recent work on the Baltic Sea coast with reference to Königsberg-born architect Bruno Taut, and his presentation this week will introduce audiences to his other reflective works that deal with cross-cultural heritage, identities, borders and memories.
