The Eckernf\u00f6rde branch of the Schleswig-Holstein University Society is hosting a series of lectures at the Schleswig-Holstein Artists’ House otte1.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 7:00 p.m., Prof. Dr. Ludwig Steindorff from the History Department at Christian Albrecht University<\/strong> will speak on \u201cThe Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation: From a Willingness to Cooperate to the Use of Force.\u201d<\/p>\n In his lecture, Prof. Steindorff traces developments from the collapse of the Warsaw Pact and the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 to the present day. On the one hand, the Russian Federation is the successor superpower to the USSR, but on the other hand, Russia is only one of 15 successor states that emerged from the USSR. Since 2014, Russian-Ukrainian relations have been clearly confrontational on both sides. In contrast, the Eurasian Economic Union, founded in the same year with Kazakhstan, Belarus, and now Armenia, is focusing on a new asymmetrical interdependence. In relation to the West, the expectation of a new equal partnership was followed by growing mutual distrust between Russia on the one hand and the West on the other. The states of Eastern Central Europe saw their integration into NATO and the EU as a free choice in line with the interests of the Western world, while Russia viewed this development as a push away. Historical memory plays an important role in the formulation of foreign policy interests on both sides. Through its involvement in Syria, Russia, like the USSR before it, sought to become one of the globally present actors.
