Artists Statement
Juan Bermudez
scholar visual arts 1.4. – 30.6.2025
What made you apply for the otte1 scholarship?
I’ve been researching how the perception of time is influenced by geographical and cultural factors, and I was interested in experiencing other rhythms of daily life. In Eckernförde, I found a place where many people seek to escape the speed of big cities. I wanted to observe how that perception of time would affect my artistic practice. Also, due to past experiences in Northern Europe, I was drawn to this region as a transition place between Central Europe and the Baltic/Scandinavian North.
What did you work on during your stay?
During my residency I worked on a project involving sound interventions in waiting spaces like bus stops. This led to a video piece exploring how sound can open cracks in the architecture of so-called “non-places.” I’m drawn to these spaces for their functional character and apparent neutrality. I also began new projects, including underwater recordings of cargo ship engines and radar signals in the Kiel Canal using a hydrophone. Finally, I started a photographic series inspired by my walks along the beach reflecting on the concept of nation as an ephemeral and artificially construct. This series was shaped by the nearby military base and current political tensions.
What inspired you at the Künstlerhaus in Eckernförde?
I was inspired by the strong sense of community at the Saturday gatherings and within the Otte 1 team, which reminded me of the importance of the local and the value of building connections between local communities and external agents. I also discovered a new way of relating to the sea and the beach. The colder climate challenged my imagination of the sea, shaped by my South American background.
What do you take away from Eckernförde for your further artistic development?
I take with me the long walks and the time I had to reflect on my ideas. Also, being connected to one’s surroundings as a way to develop my artistic practice. The Künstlerhaus helped reinforce that awareness.
What would you like to add?
I would like to thank all the team at Otte 1 for always being available for our questions and problems. I also want to thank Norbert for introducing us to new experiences. I enjoyed discovering things I didn’t know I liked, like archery.
