Artists Statement
Christian Sleiman
scholar visual arts 1.4. – 30.6.2024
What made you apply for the otte1 scholarship?
I saw the open call online and thought it was a good opportunity to spend three months in isolation and focus on my research.
What did you work on during your stay?
I researched different threads related to food politics. My recent focus was on various forms of pharmakon, a Greek term that means both poison and remedy. During the residency, I read several books, spent time working with clay and worked on new drawings.
What inspired you at the Künstlerhaus in Eckernförde?
The view from the studio overlooking the garden, the conversations with Susanne Koch, and the nature of Eckernförde.
What do you take away from Eckernförde for your further artistic development?
I spent time during the residency working with clay. I gained a better understanding of the material, which has given me more incentive to find ways to include it in my practice.
