Artists Statement
Adrian Mocanu
Scholarship music composition 1.4. – 30.6.2025
What made you apply for the otte1 scholarship?
The nomad way of life, mostly. Being able to change the environment and come to a new place is an enormous privilege for an artist, especially if it is supported by an institution like otte1.
What did you work on during your stay?
During my stay at otte1, I was working on “madrigali guerrieri. libro II” – a composition for six voices that filters the madrigals of Monteverdi through the perception of living in the times of war.
This is the second part of my collaboration with the vocal ensemble Maulwerker which started last year, and which closes the cycle which was conceived as a site-specific diptych to be performed in the Grosser Wasserspeicher in Berlin.
And, apart from that, many, many applications for future projects.
What inspired you at the Künstlerhaus in Eckernförde?
The seagulls. Their calls. Listening to them during the walks along the seaside. The maritime environment in Eckernförde is special, very different from any other coastal city I have been to. This sonic memory will stay with me for sure, and maybe it will find its way in one of my future works, who knows?
What do you take away from Eckernförde for your further artistic development?
Eckernförde gave me a time to focus, to reflect on my artistic approach – it was a time of a lot of thinking and introspection. And I’m sure that after the residency, some aspects of my work will transform and open a new chapter in my artistic path.
What would you like to add?
A huge thank you for the opportunity that came to my life at the exact moment when I needed it.
