On Hospitality

On Saturday, 21 September 2024 at 12:30 after the market, we will talk about the difficulties of hospitality.

Dealing with hospitality means focussing on an inherent dilemma. On the one hand, the management of an artist residency endeavours to apply self-imposed criteria when selecting guests; on the other hand, there are regulations and conditions that are imposed on the institution from outside.

These are the requirements of the sponsors of funding programmes, the expectations of the public and also the hopes of the applicants.

It is a matter of developing a field of action that is able to strike a balance between unconditional openness to accepting anyone who is interested in a hospitable welcome and the exclusions and marginalisations that are legitimised by rules set in the field.

Against the backdrop of the current socio-political discourse, a number of initiatives have dedicated themselves to the topic of hospitality in view of this diversity of questions. At a public round table discussion at otte1 in November, practices of welcoming culture, generosity and receptiveness, particularly in artists’ residences, will be discussed.
