Soufian Chemcham: B-Boy and Street Artist

On Saturday, 14 December 2024 at 12:30, we will be presenting the work of an artist who will be taking up a scholarship at otte1 in July next year.

Soufian Chemcham is a hip-hop artist, a storyteller and a documentary photographer. He lives in the Algerian harbour city of Jijel and is inspired by street life in his home town.

Chemcham began photographing when he and his friends decided to buy a camera to document their breakdancing and hip-hop performances. The self-taught photographer quickly turned to documentary projects that aim to capture the interaction of time, place and individual.

He is a member of the 220 collective, an association of Algerian photographers who want to express their view of contemporary Algeria. Chemcham has been working on ‘Kifesh’, a visual diary about Jijel, for four years. In a series of mostly black and white photographs, Chemcham thematises the conflict between reality, the world of ideas and the complex web of mutual relationships. He has participated in festivals, fairs and exhibitions in France, Spain and Algeria.
