Schleswig-Holstein University Society at otte1

The Eckernförde section of the Schleswig-Holstein University Society is presenting its lecture series at the Schleswig-Holstein Künstlerhaus otte1.

The series begins on 19 February 2025 at 19:00 with the lecture ‘A brief history of the world’ by Prof. Dr Sebastian Wolf. In addition to his scientific research work on the formation of stars and planets, Wolf has long been keen to communicate astrophysical knowledge in a way that is understandable to non-specialists. ‘Over the past ten years, I have given many public lectures on the question of the origin of the world’. He was repeatedly asked whether there was a popular science publication available.

Wolf is aimed at interested non-experts who want to gain an overview of current knowledge about the origins of the universe and humanity in a short space of time. The focus is always on the question of what scientific theories have to do with the reader and where the limits of our knowledge lie. Despite all the knowledge that has been gained about the world in archaeology, biology, history and physics over the last few centuries, the question remains as to what extent we can actually rely on our intellect alone. ‘The fact that our ‘everyday understanding’ reaches its limits has often been demonstrated to us in scientific discoveries on a very small and large scale – on an atomic and cosmic level,’ says astrophysicist Wolf.

otte1 is delighted to host the community of supporters and friends of Kiel University, which has existed since 1918.

Admission: non-members 5 €, members of all sections, pupils, students and trainees free of charge
