James Cook and the European discovery of the South Seas

The Eckernförde section of the Schleswig-Holstein University Society is hosting its lecture series at the Schleswig-Holstein Künstlerhaus otte1.

On Wednesday, 16 April 2025 at 19:00, Dr Andreas Mieth from the Institute for Ecosystem Research at Kiel University will talk about James Cook and the European discovery of the South Seas.

James Cook’s three circumnavigations of the world are among the pioneering scientific voyages of discovery of the 18th century. In geographical, cultural, ecological and not least nautical terms, the voyages were sensationally successful. Cook’s discoveries in the South Seas in particular brought a completely new image of this cultural region to Europe. New islands were discovered, hitherto unknown peoples were described and rare animal and plant species were documented for the first and often the last time. Renowned scientists, gifted artists and influential sponsors contributed to the success of the voyages. Andreas Mieth brings Cook’s voyages of discovery to life in an exciting narrative. His lecture is richly illustrated, including his own photos from the South Seas and pictures of the magnificent works of art that were created during and after the voyages to the South Seas.

The lecture will take place at the Künstlerhaus Schleswig-Holstein, Ottestraße 1, 24340 Eckernförde.
Admission: Non-members € 5,-. Members of all sections, pupils, students and trainees free of charge
