Harvest time – what role does the apple play in art?

On Saturday, 18 October 2025, after the market at 12:30 p.m., we will be focusing on apples at the Künstlerhaus, in keeping with the season.

The weekly market is currently bursting with crisp, colourful apples from this year’s harvest. This is therefore a fitting occasion to explore the apple in art. In art history, it appears in numerous paintings with different meanings. Its symbolism is multi-layered, rich in myths, stories and anecdotes. Until recently, this fruit and its tree of life have repeatedly taken on new meanings in art. This is also the case with the scholarship holders at our Schleswig-Holsteinisches Künstlerhaus.
