Elkin Salamanca – The hen/egg problem
Saturday 13.01.2024 – 12:30 pm – otte1 Residency
Embracing different artistic standpoints, this year’s first talk after the market at Otte1 invites Elkin Salamanca into a discussion with audiences about his two current exhibitions in Kiel.
The successful series and last aftermarket talk of 2023 hinted at questions and activities which continue to be engaged as focal points into 2024. Last year ended with a talk between Norbert Weber and Nicholé Velásquez featuring works by Caspar David Friedrich in a kind of the chicken or the egg causality dilemma.
In everyday language, the chicken-and-egg problem refers to unanswerable questions about what was the original trigger of a causal chain in which two types of events occur one after the other. The saying “Which came first: chicken or egg?” shows the basic pattern – chickens lay eggs (are the cause) and have themselves hatched from eggs (are the result).
Elkin Salamanca works with the Egg as a symbol of metamorphosis and being (a Kafkaesque-cause for alternative results). His talk at Otte1 covers an artistic journey from Latin America to Schleswig Holstein. Elkin made Kiel his new home as an intrepid man, settling in as the Pandemic was starting in 2020. His exhibitions hanging in Kiel invite viewers to engage with an artistic dimension of Time.
“Éxodo e introspección: las múltipas caras del ser-huevó” ( or “Exodus and introspection: the multiple faces of the egg-being”) serves as the theme of Elkin Salamanca’s international artistic practice in Schleswig Holstein and Otte1’s aftermarket talk in 2024.
