Cult of Souls

With the presentation of the photo series “Cult of Souls” by scholarship holder Fethi Sahraoui, otte1 begins its regular event series “After the Weekly Market”. It begins every Saturday at 12:30 pm. Admission is free. The artist is present.

Fethi Sahraoui writes about this series: “As a child, I used to visit rural festivals with my family members and remember the festive atmosphere, the music and the dances. When I started photography, these festivals were one of the first subjects I documented. After many years of participation, I photographed a kind of concrete idea – the rural festivals became my imaginary circus, my alternative world. Rural festivals are a social phenomenon used to hold out the prospect of God’s grace and blessings, in the hope of a better harvest season. Over time, it has evolved into a whole system of amusements that compensate for the lack of designated places. There, at the same moment and in the same place, one can experience the happy, the strange and the sad – that is the circus of life.”
